About Counselling #01
Sometimes referred to as 'the talking cure', counselling and psychotherapy offer a safe, caring and non-judgemental relationship in which to explore thoughts and feelings which may be too painful or difficult to share with family or friends. Current problems can be a 'trigger', releasing feelings about the past which we thought we had buried. Often, what has happened to us in the past can influence how we react to situations in the present, causing problems in many aspects of our lives.

Counselling is not about 'giving advice'. It is about learning to understand unconscious motives or 'learnt patterns of behaviour', which make us feel 'stuck' and unable to move forward in our lives. This can result in overwhelming feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, feelings of loss and unfulfilled potential, or a sense of isolation and lack of direction.

Within the counselling relationship you are free to express yourself - there are no thoughts or feelings that are 'out of bounds'. Whatever thoughts or feelings arise, we will explore these together and try to understand them.

Exploring these feelings, and the issues underlying them, is a challenging process and requires a commitment from both of us to nurture your growth, development and wellbeing. I will establish a safe, 'therapeutic' relationship where you feel supported and understood, and within which the concept of 'change' gradually becomes attainable, leading to an increased sense of personal control enabling you to move forward positively into the future.
